Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about ScoutDNS
What problem does ScoutDNS solve?
ScoutDNS protects users and devices by enforcing content filtering and threat protection at the DNS layer. It blocks access to malicious domains and objectionable content before connections are made, providing effective security and policy enforcement with and without agents, without traffic inspection or performance overhead.
Who is this product designed for?
ScoutDNS is designed for nonprofit, commercial, education, and managed service provider environments with 30 users up to tens of thousands of users. It is built for organizational use and does not offer residential or individual plans.
How does this product work at a high level?
ScoutDNS works by forwarding DNS requests from users and devices to the ScoutDNS platform, where security and content policies are evaluated before a connection is allowed. Protection can be applied at the WAN network level through simple DNS forwarding, at the subnet or VLAN level using LAN relays, or through agent-based desktop clients for both in-office and remote users.
Will this impact performance or reliability?
ScoutDNS operates at internet scale using our own global anycast network with endpoints worldwide to deliver low-latency DNS resolution wherever users operate. It is designed for maximum reliability with built-in failover, fail-open behavior, automatic rollback, and manual disable controls to keep administrators confident and in control.
What data does ScoutDNS collect, and how is it protected?
ScoutDNS processes DNS request data and limited customer-provided identifiers to enforce filtering, security, and reporting policies. ScoutDNS does not inspect user content, is not designed to process or store controlled unclassified information (CUI), and does not sell or share customer data. Logs are separated by region to support GDPR compliance and are protected using industry-standard encryption and access controls.
Where is ScoutDNS based?
ScoutDNS is based in Dallas, Texas, USA, and operates as a remote, virtual organization. Clients are supported by U.S.-based teams.
Can we try ScoutDNS before committing?
Yes. ScoutDNS offers trials for all organizations and can approve more in-depth product proofs of concept (POCs) for qualified organizations when needed.
Can I get help getting started?
Yes. ScoutDNS offers live demos for all trial users and free onboarding for new clients to help ensure a smooth and successful deployment.
